I've been asked for my input on restaurant selections for a stop in Ha Noi during an upcoming visit. I have plenty of choices among Vietnamese and Western restaurants based on the large number of reviews on TNH. Now I need some help selecting from the best of the Pho bo places. Some reviews from the Pho Only grouping are a bit dated (14+ months ago), others are awaiting a revisit and the balance have not yet been reviewed on TNH. Please post your updates, revisits and new places on the Restaurant Section and add a quick note about your favorite choices. I've been partial to Pho Thin for nearly ten years but look forward to other choices of the same high caliber authentic Pho. I'd gladly undertake pounding the pavement myself, but I'm presently geographically challenged. Thanks for...

....that seems to randomly happen when you ask a perfectly valid question about etiquette on here. Speaking of censorship what about the guy who posted that horrible question about where he could find full fat milk in hanoi? As a devout vegan I would just like to say that that offended me to the core of my being. Milk is murder! Can I assume that will be taken down too?

I'm sure others will want to know: will there be a memorial service here in Hanoi? Those close to his family, please let the rest of us know. We miss him very much, both online and off.

Well it looks like all us smokers out there have been given a happy new years present. Reading the Vietnam News today, from 1st January smoking is going to be banned in public spaces. The ban will initially be in classrooms, pre-schools, health centres, libraries, cinemas, theatres, factories, office building and on public transport. Smoking will still be permitted in sports centres, stadiums, exhibition centres, lounges, entertainment centres, restaurants, hotels and discotheques in designated areas. A provision in the new law calls for smoking to be banned in all public places by the end of next year. The fine for ignoring the ban 50,000 - 100,000 VND. I hadn't heard anything about this until today, I think we can all agree about the first list of public places, but as for the r...

I was driving around Hoan Kiem lake this evening, when traffic came to a standstill around the Northeast end. All bikes had stopped. People were getting off their bikes and running over to a growing mob of people, where in the center a young man and a young woman were arguing. The young woman refused to get on his bike so the man got off and grabbed her head and tried to force her on his bike. She refused and things began to escalate...the crowd was getting exponentially bigger, he was shouting louder at her. Unable to penetrate this crowd or drive around them or to say anything, my partner and I left the scene. I felt completely speechless and deflated, from the violence that was unfolding and the crowd that was gathering and gawking (I do realize I was watching as well). I'v...

I am just thinking ahead for the NH/Liquor Store/The Warehouse/Halia drinks this Friday night. Given that it is "the season to be jolly"- only two weeks before Christmas - and a lot of parties about, many NHs may be doubling up on Christmas celebrations etc. I will be heading to Halia after our community festive fundraiser - therefore it will be a bit of a rush to get there and into the christmas spirit/s. Consistent with the season, will others be in a similar situation? Anyone at all happen to be planning to wear, say - jinglebell earrings, reindeer antlers and a red "What happens under the mistletoe, stays under the mistletoe shirt" ???? Yes? No? Haven't decided? Or, would it be prudent for me to do a quick change in the taxi on the way?

Warning: this is a damnation not dawnation post. So, as I sit in Hapro Bon Mua by Hoan Kiem trying to work, I am also fortunate enough to enjoy listening to a very loud US woman try to fulfill every stereotype of the ugly American. Of course, a kinder and gentler dawnie would accept that she's dealing with all the new sights/smells/sounds and her accusations of under-cooked eggs, woes about the pollution, and complaints of the lack of service in restaurants is simply her way of dealing with it. I think "noise noise noise" and try to continue working. Yet when her tirade on Vietnamese "backwardness" (yes, she used that word) has now steered to how she has "rescued" the Vietnamese baby she has in her arms (yes, she used that word), I'm about 2 seconds away from going over and belting ...

I never had cable before coming to Hanoi so I don't know what is "normal" for cable. Maybe people from the big country with many TV stations can help me understand. I don't think it could be our TV -I want to know why everything on the Hallmark channel seems to be coloured more golden?. All of the skins seem to have even richer tans. Is this a common phenomenon with the station, alone? Are all happy American families well tanned? Also is there some special rule that they only show movies with about four or five words in the title? Think of any phrase and that could be a movie feature on Hallmark eg "The Ones They Left Behind",or "Long Road to Halong Bay"..... What is the best Hallmark title you have ever heard?

Just curious, who likes to meh and fail positive reviews out there? Are you: a) the competition to the establishment reviewed and worried about some positive PR? Are you more a fan of Keynes than Friedman when it comes to macro economic policy as it relates to competition? b) just plain lazy? Can't be bothered to add your own review for the benefit of the community? You find it easier to just meh and fail the positive reviews to let people know the establishment sucks. It would be useful to know why you think so but that might require you to think. c) you are a beer glass is always half empty type of person? Positive reviews irriate you just like birds singing or sun shining? Just curious who you crazy MF'ers are?

Can we get get some button about ugly avatars? Or maybe the mods can warn the NH member when their photos get a little too scary. Ok everyone's profile shot does not have to be as ho-hum as mine, but Virezo your new one causes me concern and Xau-whatisname, I cannot even read your posts unless I cover your photo with a book or something - because your shot of a toothy wild guy is hideous (thats why I don't know your name)!!!.

My friend has been bedridden for some months after crashing his motorbike into a BMW last August, and breaking every bone in one of his legs. It is his birthday tomorrow, and I would like to arrange some sort of surprise for him. I was thinking a "singing telegram" or similar, would be a cheery bedside celebration. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing in Hanoi? Or could make any suggestions about how to help this bored invalided 33 year old to celebrate his birthday?

I have it in my mind that I might like to live in Long Bien. Near the Long Bien bridge if possible. There's something about those cows and chickens walking along the roadside that strikes a cozy cord in my body. Kind of like country in the city. Problem is Long Bien doesn't even seem to be listed in the "housing" category here. Does anyone know of an agent in that area, or better still, a house that might be available? I have a couple of months left on my lease, so really, there's no panic.

Stayed up way too late last night, drinking coffee, and now it’s a lovely rainy day I just want to crawl back into my comfy bed and snooze. But I have to be out and about today. Epiphany – I can sleep out and about. Everyone else does !! But wait, I have a Concern : It’s not that people actually have a nanna nap(or power nap - like me), lots of nations do - but that no-one is actually embarrassed to been seen in what I would consider a vulnerable position. From shop assistants to bank tellers, xeom drivers and more - sleeping in full view of other people, possibly snoring, drooling, farting, splayed, talking and partially disrobed. I just feel like I don't know you all well enough to....... Although I support the right to nap in your lunch break I should mention I have an issue ...

I'm facing more and more aggression in this bloody nightmare traffic. This aggression is especially coming from crazy car drivers who get so frustrated on these roads. A few weeks ago in a small alley. I rode my bicycle and a car behind me started to sound the horn like a crazy man. I looked back angrily wihtout making any aggresive gesture. Emmediately the guy stopped the car and started yelling at me. I told him to fuck off and drive on and that he's a crazy man. He started fighting me. Happily that the mob stopped this crazy idiot. Today one taxi driver was suddenly turning left without giving direction. I felt in danger on the bike and I looked angrily to him. Emmediately he started shouting and he tried to push me off the road with his taxi! He also threw objects at me. ...
