Dropped into Thu Cuc recently with friends (they also work in spas) to see what the competition is like. I am being as unbiased in this review as I can be.

I had a Swedish massage. Something like VND460,000 for the hour, one masseuse. But, let me begin at the beginning.

The waiting area in Thu Cuc is tastefully done, unless you look to closely and see some pretty shoddy workmanship on the main walls. The building itself is a tall narrow house. The waiting area has a lovely water feature and the sound of softly trickling water is quite soothing. But there was something missing - music. You know, that soft gentle, pan-pipes or similar music that so many spas have. Nothing like that her. And probably needs it. The other drawback with the waiting area is that staff use it for gossiping and chatting on their phones, which somewhat disturbs the atmosphere. More so, customers who have finished use it to return calls and so forth - I think making it a phone-free-zone would be a good thing.

So, having selected treatments, on up to the 8th floor for my massage. Here, the facilities are excellent. Large rooms, well designed, well appointed. A credit to them. Curiously, the massage beds are low, not high. Which seems odd and clearly makes the masseuse have to bend awkwardly at times - which cannot be good for them. Shower facilities are really nice but the huge rainhead showers don't live up to what they look like, producing those sharp needles of water rather than a soft gentle flow. Detail, detail.

My massage itself was pretty good. (No music again until halfway through, which was odd.) Not great (but I have been spoiled elsewhere) but certainly did the job. The masseuse knew her craft and carefully eased a few knots out of various places during the massage. At the end, a head and face massage was provided. And here is where a few things fell apart for me. Why people feel it is OK to do a head/scalp massage on dry hair is quite beyond me. It feels awful (to me) and is nothing like a good scalp massage with wet shampooed hair. But the real downside was the fingers in the ears part. Now, I'm all for letting the masseuse do her thing and not being too bothered, but putting fingers in my ears, no doubt collecting ear wax along the way, then immediately returning to massage my head (hair!) without washing??? Not cool. Not cool at all. So I then felt like I had earwax in my hair and on my face. Not pleasant.

In summary, as far as facilities, presentation and overall ambiance - Thu Cuc does quite well. It's the finer details that let them down, in my opinion. I think a post-treatment waiting area, separate to the main entrance, would go a really long way to helping customers prepare to face the real world again. Having said that, I do feel better for the massage and will probably revisit in time.

I tried here for 2 times. Honestly, I think the price is quite expensive. The price is not proper for the services quality. I took massage body package but it was really indifferent. I was a little bit disappointed. And the staffs was not really friendly and qualified. To be frank, I don't think I will come back here in the future. I will find the better salon to deserve for money I pay.

Pricey...but you get what you pay for.
Full leg wax 420,000vnd. Yikes! But incredibly thorough and in a relaxing setting, I actually fell asleep! Good quality wax and limited pain!
My housemate loves the massages, and highly recommends the sauna/steamroom which is never busy.

Very nice, professional and relaxing spot. And I completely agree with the previous reviewers: the staff is fantastic and the treatments are what the refers to - a complete treat.

However, I'd also suggest to go with dawnations suggestion to stick with the massages and facials. I went against the recommendations and ended up being slightly disappointed with the pedicure / manicure I had here. I actually would have been happy with a sad little basket of only few colours from which to choose from, but there was none, nada, no colours at all! And they charge 2 dollars extra for cutting the nails, and actually started clipping away before (and without) asking my preference on the length. So no, the place is not for the nails but for overall relaxation it's fantastic.

And they're open untill late: 9.30pm and even though my treaments lasted a bit longer, there was no feeling of rush or of them trying to get rid of me - quite the contrary. When I was worrying about the time, they even claimed there was a customer coming in at 9.30 so I had no reason to feel bad about going after hours. This was not true of course and it seemed they closed up right after I left.

So all in all, I'd give the place 5 stars, but the unexistence of colours and a bit too enthusiastic clipping + not using any rasps costs them one. Basically it's just a fancy foot or hand massage! Luckily, the quality of the massages and facials + the staff makes up for most of it..

I had a wonderful facial at Thu Cuc. Extractions are not included in the normal facial so you must specify that you want them. On the list of services they have a facial with non-impacted blackhead extractions; specify you want this plus whiteheads to the girl at the front and also to the girl who does the actual facial specify that you want extractions all over the face. That seemed to get the message across. Nzam (sp?) did my facial, she does not speak much English except "are you okay?" but was EXCELLENT. There are some nice touches- like serving tea upon arrival and at the end of the facial. 1 hour facial with extractions is $22. My skin was literally glowing afterwards!
