Expected great things from this cookery school restaurant! I ordered a fried fish banh mi, usually sold fr around 30000 dong, everywhere else, so my expectations were raised by the 100000 dong price.
Firstly, the service was poor, she obviously had other things to do as she was absent most of the time and I had to look for her to place an order, and pay the bill.
The coffee was great, served before the food,and lukewarm, but I should have asked to have it served after my food,I guess.
The banh mi was served in the usual sidewalk bread roll (surely, a cooking school can bake their own rolls?), which was obviously not fresh as it had to be crisped up in an oven.
The fish was placed on a few leaves of lettuce,although one expects to have cucumber, tomato and other salads in the roll. It was served with a tablespoon of mayonnaise and chili sauce - the bottled variety. Perhaps a cooking school could have made ther own mayo and chili - it takes 5 minutes with minimal skill and is much better than Hellmans!
The fish fillets were crumbed, but unfortunately were soggy with cold oil, most unpleasant to have oil squirting out with each bite.
Surely a professional school could do better?
I don't normally review but I saw the comments below and felt compelled to respond. We also went for the Sunday roast today and were really impressed.
The broccoli, green beans and cauliflower were all perfectly cooked with a tasty white sauce over the cauliflower. The generous portions of lamb were well cooked and still slightly pink and accompanied by a dollop of gravy and sweet mint jelly. Roasted potatoes completed the meal and even though I was full, I indulged In the golden syrup pudding which was also memorable.
The only (minor) issue was that I had to repeat my coffee order but it was very good when it did arrive.
I think the previous reviewer must have arrived later as it was busy (or maybe her mum did a different style of roast to mine!) Anyway we thoroughly enjoyed it and it was the perfect antidote to a cold Hanoi day
This is definitely one of our favourite places in Hanoi, it never disappoints.
We had a very pleasant lunch in the courtyard, food was delicious, in particular the fresh spring rolls. Coffee was also very good.
My husband and son did the street food tour and have raved non-stop since, we highly recommended it to
anyone who has not done it.
The whole set-up and service here is just wonderful, well done Tracey and staff, you should be thrilled with what you've achieved!!!
What a wonderful place to while away a lazy breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea. We popped in the other day; the weather was perfect for sitting in the cosy courtyard. I had the Meze from the menu and my partner had the fresh Mackerel spring rolls. But it is hard choosing from so many yummy dishes. Everything is fresh and seasonal.
While we waited we flicked through some of the books from Bookworm, eventually buying a second hand crimi. What a perfect place to choose books while snacking or sipping a coffee, chatting with friends and other diners. Surely these two businesses were made for each other!
My Meze arrived and I was thoroughly delighted with my mix of falafel, babaganoush, hummus and deliciously marinated prawns served with a warm pitta bread; so many different tastes. What a treat! My partner was equally praising of her fresh spring rolls.
The atmosphere was equally pleasant, both Tracy one of the owners of HCC and Rob one of the owners of bookworm came out to have a chat and enquire after us. We also chatted to other folks sitting around in the courtyard, because that is just the kind of place it is.

A group of us went here for the Sunday lunch and syrup sponge pudding today.
7 of us had the Lamb Roast and sadly we were all disappointed, the veg was really dried up and not very hot, the meat was very fatty and there just was not enough of everything.. We thought we would fill up on the syrup sponge pudding, but alas, were told their was only 2 portions left. We left and headed to Joma for coffee and to fill up on cakes. We will try HCC again, hoping this was just a bad day.
