Hanoi

In a word, awesome. I honestly don\'t know what I would do if this website didn\'t exist. A wealth of information that is unparalleled to anything I have seen in many other Asian cities. Downsides? Somewhat strict and counter-intuitive rules regarding posting questions. That and a pool of smug us...

This small street food stall has the most amazing pho xao in all of Hanoi. Going there is a true cultural experience.

It is only open at night and the stall itself is a small metal number with little stools and tables. The "counter" has pigs feet, ducks/geese and chickens sitting on it and staring at you ready to be cooked up. The street food feel is completed with the traffic wizzing close by on Pham Ngoc Thach.

The lady who cooks it is a jovial old Ba who fries up this delightful dish in an old, burned pan. She burns the noodles until they are crisp, though not inedible, with some kind of peanut oil. Then she fries the beef and finally the vegetables; bean sprouts, garlic and a small amount of well chopped mustard greens (so the leaves don't get stuck in your throat). When all this is completed (a usually 5-10 minute process) she mixes it together, smiles, and hands you the plate.

The moment you get the chopsticks to your mouth, your taste buds explode. The mixture of crispy pho noodles, bean sprouts, homemade chili sauce and sliced beef with a hint of peanut makes you want to cry tears of joy.

The best part is that the portion is usually large enough to fill you up. The worst is that it costs 50,000 vnd, though that is a small price to pay for some of the best food in the world.
