I haven't eaten at the "other one" but this place seems solid. Bun Cha was 55 and loaded with delicious patties and pork strip - more than enough. I don't have enough experience with other Bun Cha places but you really can't wrong here - just avoid sitting directly in front of the blast chiller on the second floor!
Forgive me if this place is elsewhere on the New Hanoian but I couldn't find it which I was amazed by.
Why? Because forget the "famous one" this is waaay better.
The person I dined with said she thought that this was some kind of spin off of the Hang Manh restaurant. Perhaps a family feud or an expansion of the empire but you can see much in common between the two. Not least the huge portions.
But what you also get here, that you don't get at the other place, is just a little bit more cleanliness. Not much but a bit. Overall it's just less messy and tables are cleared faster. There's lots of room upstairs and downstairs too.
The food, is also just slightly better and the nem are unmatched. Really really good.
I keep going back to the Gastronomy Top 10 when I want to check out Hanoi streetfood:
...and this is the one they went to.
So, basically you can struggle with the crowds at the "famous" one and sit in the more cramped, less tidy area or you can head to this place, a short noodle away. There they have taken the original recipe for success and improved upon it.
I reckon, weighing everything up, it's pretty much head and shoulders above the other one.
