This review is long overdue. A few reasons for writing it now:
Firstly, some years ago, I confess, I was a little critical of HCC's fairly expensive, advertised cooking classes. Unfortunately, I was critical without having actually attended a class...! I have since had the opportunity to attend a cooking class that included a market tour and discussion as well as preparing, cooking and eating a range of Vietnamese dishes. This experience remains, for me, a highlight of my activities in Hanoi. The class was well led, had great participants and I learned cooking techniques that I still use today in my own cooking. I can't recommend the classes highly enough - professional, informative, excellent value and a lot of fun!
Secondly, I've attended a few events at HCC over the years and loved every single one of them. The team really performs well and makes event attendees welcome all the time.
Thirdly (and perhaps most importantly!) HCC continues to the a consistently high quality provider of Hot Cross Buns. I am somewhat of an addict and a fussy addict at that! I don't like the peel in most Hot Cross Buns so I request mine to be made without. HCC have no problem with my request and make them to order. This year I introduced my colleagues at work to this delicacy - they all love them! This addict is up to his third order of the season and Easter still is not here... Thanks HCC for making such a great product and feeding my addiction so well...!
Fourthly - communication with the whole team at HCC is flawless. Simply flawless. Whether by phone or by email or in person, everyone is an absolute pleasure to deal with. For me, HCC is an example of just how successful and impressive a business can be in Hanoi.
If you're a local resident, get to know them and make them a part of your ongoing life here. If you're a visitor, go and do a class and/or hang out in the cool courtyard cafe.
A great business, run by great people, providing great products and service. An easy five stars from me.
We popped in for lunch, and had a great time , the staff were excellent and the food was very yummy. While we were there we enrolled on the ' Eat Streets Tour' for the next day . It was fantastic !! And ended up being our best bit of Hanoi !! We went to 5 different local street stalls, we ate noodles, BBQ, soups, and desserts including many things that I would not have dared to try alone. We also went around the market and the chef / guide were very thorough in their explanation of the different ways in which the food is prepared. The tour lasted for over 5 hours!! but myself and the 4 others on the tour were shocked at how fast it went. This really is special, and I would recommend it to everyone that loves Asian food especially if you don't have the courage or the knowledge to know what to ask for or where to find it! The tour helped us get a great understanding of Hanoi's food scene and its food culture, and really was the highlight of our holiday.
It is worth coming here for the location and the staff alone but the food is great as well. Especially for a western breakfast this is one of the to-go-to-places in Hanoi. I wouldn't eat Vietnamese there, just as it is quite expensive and I prefer streetfood but it is my favourite sunday brunch place in Hanoi.
Hanoi Cooking Centre's Street Food Tour should be compulsory for all visitors to Hanoi - a real highlight of my stay so far, very informative, great food and good fun. Follow this tour up a few days later with the street food cooking class and you'll be able to prepare some of the tasty morsels yourself. All staff at HCC are great and the cafe is a great place to hang out for lunch or over a beer or wine.
