Phone: unknownI had a great breakfast here this AM: quiche, homemade yogurt w/fruit, cafe sua nong and a coconut pastry! (high in calories/fat, but who counts the calories this time of year!)
During my first stay in Hanoi this place was a regular haunt.
Somehow though I got it into my head that while it had been great back then, nowadays Hanoi had plenty of better options.
And then I returned and I realised how great it still was.
Huge menu, really good quality baked goods. Staff, though shy at first, will recognise you with a smile when you visit a second time.
Their stack of cheese and ham toasties only take a minute to warm up before they're on your plate. They're addictive. Try stopping after one - you can't.
The great yoghurt, the fabulous banana cake, sausage rolls - not to mention plenty of Vietnamese options too.
Really good. Really cheap. Really worth a visit.
This is definitely a 'don't judge a book by the cover' kind of place.
From the outside it looks like nothing special - a few oldies chatting over their coffee, random staff sitting around gossiping, there's a small display cabinet with some cakes, and menus that look like they've seen better days.
But the food here! ôi giời ơi, the pastries! Holy crap, their quiche is a good as my mum makes, how the hell is that possible? I've stopped off and picked up a few things and they've all been wonderful, better than bakeries that charge much more. I keep meaning to come for a proper lunch, but it hasn't happened yet, which is surely my loss.
In addition to coffee, one of the other few benefits of French Colonialism in Viêt Nam is yogurt. Unlike in many Asian countries, the stuff is actually fairly popular - you can get it in every grocery story or mom and pop shop that has a fridge.
Café Kinh Dô makes it's own delicious variety. Being a homemade yogurt maker myself, I had to check the place out, and order a cà phê sủa chua đá - coffee with yogurt and ice - a great morning treat.
Fall in love with the pastries there though they're so pricey *cry*
:D
