Dined here for the first time recently. Spent half the meal harassing my wife for not taking me here sooner! What a GREAT restaurant.

When you arrive, charming staff will escort you to a table, arrange everything for you, light a candle and leave you with food and drink menus. You are given as much time as you need - there is no sense of rushing to order here.

I'm going to begin with the wine list. Usually, in most restaurants in Vietnam, I skip the Aussie and NZ wines and head for European or South American labels that can be purchased at reasonable prices. Big mistake here! San Ho's wine list is nothing short of superb. Strong Aus and NZ labels well represented and stocked. We chose a Western Australian Semillon Sav Blanc to accompany the seafood - and it proved the perfect choice. The prices listed are by far the best I have seen for A/NZ wines in Hanoi for quality labels. I cannot begin to emphasise how refreshing this is. Staff open the wine in front of you and provide a tasting. Each pour of white wine was quite small, allowing the wine to stay cold in the ice bucket. Staff kept an eye on our glasses and topped us up regularly and unobtrusively.

So to the food menu. This is well designed with various clear sections to help you choose your meal. By far the bulk of the menu is seafood - there are a few other meat dishes but San Ho stick to what they do best. Whether you are seeking shark fin, abalone, prawns, lobsters, scallops, fish... the list goes on, you will definitely find something to please you here. A complimentary starter of spicy squid is provided to get you going.

We chose the pomello and prawn salad and a sour seafood lau. The salad was divine - fresh and succulent prawns, of a good size with delicious fruit and other salad ingredients. Quite large and served in a pomello as well - nice touch.

The lau was quite superb and huge. it is served in individual bowls with the larger bowl on the table. Staff will then top you up as you work your way through the serving. It is very filling, being crammed full of squid, prawns and veges - certainly more than we were anticipating.

One of the highlights of the evening was actually watching other tables and their choices. A couple of tables chose lobster. This is a ceremony in itself. First, the live lobster is brought to your table in a basket for inspection. Upon acceptance, the lobster is then drained (alive) at your table with the juice left in a bowl (for what I am not sure...). The lobster is then taken away to be cooked and returned thoroughly prepared for eating. Various sizes are available - Vietnamese guests loved this experience. A couple of visitors were also there and their young daughter was at first repulsed then fascinated by the whole deal, snapping shots whenever she could. This is on my list for our next visit!

After the meal, complimentary tea and fresh ginger is provided to round things out. We asked for a taxi to be called and outside, staff helped us find the right taxi, communicate with the driver and see us safely on our way.

This was a fine experience. My wife, having been here many times over the years, is still suffering my surprise. In a lot of restaurants, it is easy to find fault - here, there was no fault to be seen. Whenever I feel the need for a seafood fix in a fine dining environment, San Ho will now be my first choice. Highly recommended.

Perhaps this is the best seafood restaurant in Hanoi. By reputation anyway. People I know, living here and visiting, regard eating here as a real treat.

On my first visit to San Ho 4 years ago, it left a very memorable impression - lobster, grouper, nem.

Since living here I have been back a number of times. The food is always good and being a specialty seafood establishment the selection is large.

The oysters have become my favourite. Plump (from Da Nang I think) and flavoured from spicy to mornay and a couple of choices in between. But can't go wrong with the drunken Tiger prawns, soft shell crab, or fish, or...

The decor is very nice, set in an old villa, and the service is good and the staff are outfitted attractively.
Very good wine list and cold beers.

So a top restaurant that others I know would award 5 stars. For some reason it is not my first choice, butI never turn down an invitation.
