What once were a great mound of the delicious and a fair price is now a greasy homogeneous tasteless disappointment.
Nem? No taste. Cha? No taste. Sauce? Minimal taste.
Price? 90k? Eh? Ok fine then.
It looks the part, oh yes, piles of fantastic looking meat and nem, proper scungy decor, suitably cramped upper levels, and a handy location for some, but the product is just not there.
Eat two bowls somewhere else.
Another street food restaurant that I've grown to enjoy. This dish consists of miniature beef burgers and bacon served in a bowel of broth to which you add your own noodles and veggies. They also serve very tasty spring rolls.
The food has been good every time I've eaten here, and the place itself is kept reasonably clean by the staff, so no vast quantities of litter on the floor and the tables look like they get wiped down reasonably often.
As for most street food, the price is good. Our food always comes fast. I have no idea if they speak English as I'm normally here with my wife, but as they only serve one or two things, I don't envisage any difficulties in ordering. Simply pointing at someone else's food should do the trick.
One word of warning though is that this place appears to open early and close early. The last time I was there, we arrived at 6:45pm and by the time we left a little after 7pm they were washing up the dishes and ready to go home.
I've never had any complaints with this place, so 4 stars for being a good example of local street food done well.
I reviewed this place several months ago and gave it three stars. The review can be found here:
I stand by most of what I wrote in that earlier review, however I am re-rating it down, as their prices have recently increased significantly. At the time I wrote my last review, one serve of bun cha and two nem cost VND60,000. I ate there two months ago and again today, and both times they charged me VND90,000. The standard price for bun cha around the city is approximately VND30,000. Yes, everyone who loves this place will cry "but you get such big servings!" - yeah, but they aren't twice the size of what you get at an average bun cha stall, and definitely not three times the size.
This place is now much too expensive relative to its competitors. Not good value at all. Minus one star.
Edit: I just read the review below of someone claiming they were recently charged VND55,000 for their meal here. In that case, I guess the restaurant screwed me, because I was charged VND90,000. Twice. In that case, maybe this should be a one star review.
Just been here for lunch for the 3rd time, the Bun Cha is very good (best I have found in my limited time here) and the portions are massive and coma inducing, nem are OK here but I got charged 15K VND each which is normally the price for 2! Service is quick and efficient and they are used to serving foreigners but every time I come here the price seems to increase!
bún chả– 50K VND (It was 35K not too long ago) & nem cua bể – 15K VND each on this occasion
Feeling of being ripped off...priceless
You can go to many other places and pay half this albeit it for smaller portions and bún chả not as good as here, my search for great (and cheap) bún chả continues...
