A good hairdresser and a good tailor have a lot in common; both know what you want and how you want it. Upon maturing (that euphemism for growing old ungracefully), the former nurtures your thinning hair as if in its heyday, the latter smoothens your expanding belly as if it doesn’t exist at all. Both listen patiently to your perceived lists of ailments with reverence, hiding their annoyance professionally. Moreover, unlike your other half, they always (pretend to) understand you :-)
This confession was necessary to explain the desolation that befell me when told that my favourite hairdresser, who for years had cut me to great satisfaction, had resigned as the no. 1 Senior Hairstylist of a well known salon downtown, renowned by expats (if only for it’s convenient location on Hai Ba Trung). She must have toiled there for some 10 to 15 years, if memory serves me well and judged by the number of clients, women and men alike who queued to experience her hairstyling skills, I wasn’t the only one regretting her leaving.
As it was a case of “address temporarily unknown” suitable replacement in the area I live in was hard to get by. Experiencing mild suffering at the hands of a few barbers worthy to be labelled barbarians was all I acquired, deservedly getting ‘value’ for money, though.
On the brink of falling prey to becoming a ‘grumpy old man’, I was gladly surprised discovering that the ‘Lady in Question’ had started her own stylish Hair Salon in an even more convenient place, the appropriate Golden Westlake towers. Indeed, next to Tay Hó and just ten minutes drive from downtown.
And what a place it is! Spacious, well designed and decorated with eye for detail and material, and ample, almost private space to discuss trivial and less mundane issues during the therapy (after all, that’s what one does, isn’t it?). There’s a separate room for hair washing and several cosy couches to indulge in mani- cum pedicure. Coffee, tea or drinks are routinely served by friendly staff and the whole site exhumes quietness, sophistication, and warmth. Not in the least thanks to the qualities of the owner-hairstylist (Ms Mai Anh, in case you want to join the ranks) that are beyond reproach, what with her impressive credentials aforementioned don’t need further recommendation.
After three months of not daring to look in the mirror, I feel revitalized, while my staff complimented me for looking ten years younger (but then they may easily confuse spring with a pay rise in the air).
Here you are: I did the talk, now yóu have to do the walk. The salon is situated past the gate and tennis courts, housed between a restaurant and a small supermarket, all combinable in one go.
My vote? 5 stars, right away. Highly recommended.
I've been going to this salon for the last several months and have really come to enjoy it. The bald cuts and facial trimming are nice, and the facials are top notch. The staff is extremely accommodating, takes reservations and regularly has promotions, and has great respect for its customers.
It's located inside of the Golden Westlake housing area, so taxis are always at the ready. All in all I'd highly recommend this spot for its quality. It's not the cheapest place in the area but definitely one of the best spots.
Mai Anh in HairStream ..... Simply the best hairdresser ever ..... and this is a testimony from someone who has had her hair terrorized, frizzed, perniciously permed and butchered in the hands of hairdressers in at least 3 continents.
Go and be pampered in her new salon. Her shampoo girl also gives a fabulous service. There is a nail spa, as well as facials on offer.
How good is Mai Anh? So good that I keep coming back to her over 9 years .... So whenever I am in Hanoi, Mai Anh is one of the first persons I visit!
