i visited here twice. the first time is to watch "tuong", really great. the actor was beautifully made up. i didnt understand their language but the way they sang really impressed me, i've never watched something like that before. the second time i visited here as my friend asked me out, there was a play, not "tuong". i didnt like it much as i didnt understand the language and it doesnt sound good. you should come here to watch "tuong" at least once.

They're currently renovating this theatre and I've yet to find out whether they've relocated the weekly show temporarily or not but I'll revisit this review when I figure out whats going on.

The National Tuong Theatre is a grossly under-appreciated troupe. I went here a few times last year and was blown away by how cool it was. Even without translations - which I hope they include in the future - it was still possible to get the general gist of the tales. It's nice for tourists and those unaccustomed to tuong to have short excerpts in an only one-hour performance. It also cost next to nothing.

Sadly, each time I went there were no more than 10 people in the 250+ seat theatre.

Guys you should go to Tuong theatre for the full hour of real music and entertainment. I also think it's not well promoted yet, as the last time we were there, around 30 people performed for the smal audience of only 7 of us. As new hanoians you guys should give it a go, and the old hanoian should appreciate the show more.
Please take your children with you - the show is only an hour and only 50,000VND a ticket - kids under 5 go free and there are plenty of interesting things for them to see. My 2 year and a half little girl absolutely fell in love with it.
I hope you have a good time as we did there.

I don't think this is very well promoted, because I only found out about it recently. But really, if you visit Hanoi and don't see a performance, you're missing out on something! If I had to choose between Tuong Theatre and the Water Puppets, I would choose Tuong. Take children, they will love the dragons! Still only 50,000 VND and still a small audience.

The Vietnam National Tuong Theatre performs excerpts from tuong (Vietnamese classical opera) at the beautiful old Hong Ha Theatre weekly on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 6pm. 50000VND and worth every dong! Not to be missed! The colour brochure explaining every piece means you basically miss nothing, of what is very accessible and clever theatre! Plus as an extra you get some Royal Hue Court Music (Nha Nhac) declared by UNESCO as part of the world's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Unlike the Cheo Hanoi (reviewed earlier)mercifully there is no problem with the sound! I've been twice, taking friends, and they have thoroughly enjoyed it, wondering why so few are in the audience. That was some weeks ago, and maybe the word is now out. The famous tuong 'excerpt' of the Lady (Ho Nguyet Co) Who Turns Back Into A Fox is worth thre price of admission. For those of us working, 5pm can be an awkward time to get to a show, but do it if you can! Get there before this Hanoi gem disappears!
