Look around. You might suspect that all Hanoian cafe owners are driven by a common impulse--toward homogeneity.

This place offers something different:

A dark basement.
The gaze of a scorpion.
The hiss of a snake.
The silence of a skull.

"Ca phe da?"
"Yes. With milk and venom please."

People go to Ngoc Khanh Street for all kinds of reasons. But this cafe is the real attraction.

Getting your documents notarized?
Go here too.

Stocking up on pharmaceuticals?
Go here too.

Gazing out over the vast expanse of Ho Giang Vo, just cuz?
Go here too.

Here be monsters. And coffee.

***I put the arrow in the wrong place on the map. But Ngoc Khanh is easy to find. Good luck!

Update (Oct 2013):

I am rocking this place as we speak. Its a great place to write a Dostoyevsky novel. Or a Kafka novel. Take your eyes off the creepy crawlers for a few minutes...you could probably write Gone With the Wind. Or weave urban myths about Vivien Leigh's eyebrows.

At any rate, you should come here. Maybe you travel alot. Maybe you can't committ to a freakish reptile pet. But you can visit one.

"What's your name?"

They gaze up at you ..and ask: "whadda u want it ta be?"
I make alot of friends here.

Seriously people. This place is wonderful, but always empty. I dont want it to close. I'll lose alot of friends.

If anything you get a chance to see Hanoian people treat animals humanely.

The animals here obviously love Louis Armstrong.

Do you have children? Bring them here. Point and laugh, play and drink coffee--instead of demoralizing them at the Hanoi zoo.

This place is wonderful. Don't let it close.

Are you in the area? Did you go somewhere else--to some other cafe?

There should be nothing left for you but suicide.

I took my daughter here on a whim because it is conveniently close to work. Beers are a little pricey, but that's fair enough for a gimmicky place like this.

Most of their animals on display are snakes, lizards or turtles, but they also have some hedgehogs as well. They've kept some of the strange statuary from the previous bars that have been at this address and added some other touches that go well with the ruined temple theme.

Not all the tanks/enclosures are fully sealed, and because of the atmospheric gloom it had me wondering if an inhabitant had escaped.

We had an enjoyable time, with my daughter hissing, roaring and occasionally mooing at the animals. I don't think I'd race back on my own but with a toddler or young child in tow it is an agreeable place to linger over a beer.
