Hello all ELT teachers, Am planning to do the CELTA training here in Paris, how difficult is it to pass? Has been some time since I studied grammar, syntax etc. formally, way back in US high school days. Thanks for your feedback on this.

We have heard a rumour that upon leaving Vietnam you can get your tax back from working as an ESL teacher. I've been looking on the internet but everything sounds a bit vague. We've been paying 10% tax while we have been working as non-contracted casual teachers, for approximately 20 hours a week. Is there a specific length of time that you need to work to be entitled to this? ie. 6 months? Is there anywhere you can get official inormation and should my school know about it when I put it to them?

Hi, I have been sent on a mission by a friend back home to buy him a REAL cigarette lighter as used by the american GI's during the war. Can anyone tell me if such a beast exists and if so where I might be able to purchase it at a reasonable price. Also can anyone tell me how I would recognise it as the genuine article ? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks! Scott

I am leaving Hanoi soon and am cleaning out my closet. Anyone know where I can donate clothes and other household items to a local organization?

Has anyone visited the Ecole Francaise d'Extreme Oriens (EFEO)library at 54 Ngo Ha Hoi? I'm interested in stopping by on a return visit to Ha Noi later this year and will be grateful for any information or comments. There is a short article about the EFEO on Vietnam Pathfinder website. Thanks in advance.

Anyone know good places to buy ethnic minority textiles/fabrics in Hanoi, especially places that might have fair trade/sustainable development fabrics and textiles? Cheers

Just moved to Hanoi and I'm looking to buy a Chinese style bike, either new or used. Any recommendations on good places to buy one? And how much should I expect to pay? Thanks so much. I'm a bit clueless about all of this.

Non-stick women's clothes Will be in Hanoi for 1-3 months and would prefer to buy clothes once I am there and slightly more settled than bring oodles of stuff with me. BUT, my one experience living in Asia was Taiwan a few years back and I had a very hard time finding clothes that fit. I am not terribly picky, would even settle for Gap or Old Navyish solid color casual clothes if need be. Wondering what the experiences of the other western women in Hanoi is re this matter. Thanks in advance, D

What jobs can be obtained by foreigners in Vietnam, other than teaching English? While spending a year in Hanoi, almost everyone I met was a teacher, aside from a few NGO workers and the occasional engineer. I'm curious to see what other oportunities there are, so please share your experiences...

I've just arrived in Hanoi, and I'm finding some of the information in this forum very useful. Can I ask you guys - what are they smoking in those big bamboo pipes? I see them all over the place.
