Last dumbass question for May, promise. So, watching a show on chupacabras and Bigfoot, Yeti, and all other monster phenomenon got me wondering: are there similar entities in Vietnam? Yes, this is random querying on my part, but would love to know if there are any similar quasi-real creatures in Vietnamese lore. I have not yet heard any such stories and probably the horrors of 20th century wars are large enough psychic burdens, but just curious. So, in other words, has Bigfoot been sighted in Vietnam?

Historically on ANH Friday is a caring, sharing kinda day. Today I even feel brave enough to confess one of my secrets ... Sucked in by the secrecy and mystery surrounding the New Hanoian website I sometimes like to play a game called "Spot a New Hanoian". When out and about I have been chipped a few times for not paying attenion to the conversation at hand, and scanning the crowd for cross dressers, the dentally challenged and African fauna. Ok, I suppose I could just go on the Halong Bay trip and meet you all - but what would be the fun of that? Er, wait, now that would be fun... Meanwhile, humour me, if you will. I have a BIG weekend planned. I know where I will be. Where will you be? Give me a clue as to your appearence (though I make no promises -I may stalk, or not) Me...

Would it be possible to allow the editing of comments just like we're able to edit our questions? It's just some of us just aren't really that adept with a small keyboard and make typos (... whilst others are just drunk, erhem...). But after posting a comment then proof reading it (I know you're supposed to do it the other way), I often find I feel like a moron and want to edit. ...a date and time stamp for each comment may also be good ...and since I'm here rambling on, smileys would be good too so people know when you're being sarcastic.

There is a man sleeping on my couch. He is about 1 metre away from me as I type. I came back from a brief outing with my helper and son (they are still out) and this man, who is accompanying the workman fixing our doorbell, is lying on our couch watching a movie. I don't know if he is a relative of the landlord as they sometimes come to fix things.... I am bewildered as to what response to have. This kind of thing is not acceptable in Australia.... I don't feel I can be inhumane and get them to wait outside and I want my things fixed- but the Land Lady never even sits down unless invited to,and I feel sleeping on my couch is a bit of an imposition. What should I do or say?????

Hello! I am wanting to find out if there is a decent skin cancer specialist in Hanoi. Can anyone help? Or is Bangkok the nearest likely place. Thanks in advance!

I'd really like to discuss this topic with someone who has an informed opinion (vet; pet owner; thoughtful and ethical person; etc) I've seen a lot of cats / kittens around Hanoi in conditions that break my heart - they are mangey, usually attached to a tree with a short chain, and underfed. I understand the need to restrain cats so they don't get hit by traffic, but not convinced that chaining them to a tree is a humane option. Interesting the small dogs I see around the place tend to be in better conditions, and less of them are chained up. I've been fighting urges to 'rescue' these animals (I haven't tried yet, but I'm thinking offering US$10 might get me the cat, or at least the owner valuing the cat more highly). However, I'm only going to be here for two years and thus can'...

Where have all the names gone? In the last week every town name has been removed from those blue rectangular signs....? This is from Cua Ong to Hanoi. All gone and this passes through several provinces and districts on the way. Is this to confuse tourists/locals? Are we being renamed? Was it aliens? Why would anybody do that? Ask A New Hanoian is in serious danger of becoming Ask A New ..An.

I really think I won for the first time ever-or at least came equal first!! I don't often fly alone and unencumbered so last weekend- flying Vietnam Airlines to Hue- was my chance to trump everyone in "First Up Wins". 1. On landing, you have to WAIT until the seatbelt sign goes OFF 2. Then, be first up with your cabin baggage retrieved out of the overhead locker, in hand, ready to go and pushing toward the exits. 3. From that moment you become the WINNER of all winners, SUPREMO of the supremes, you have FACE, and how!!! (regardless of the fact that you have to wait for the stairs to be attached, bus to arrive to shuttle you to the terminal.....) AND If you jump up before the seatbelts sign is switched off, thats a disqualification, a low move, a LOSER of face. These are the ...

Does anyone happen to know what determines the exchange rate between currencies? What determines the strength of a currency and how does it change according to the economic state of the country? If it depends on the GDP of the country and/or the gold reserves of it, why is British Pound is more powerful than USD?

How do I go about telling my landlord that I don't want him in my house for four hours every Saturday? He uses the excuse of needing to water the plants and burn incense, but it's pretty obvious he just wants to hang around and see what's happening. He's single-handedly ruining my day off. Anyone else have this problem? How did you handle it?

As discussed on the weekend there seems to be a valid requirement for an additional tabbed option on this webpage. The Drunk Tab.... This is especially for individuals who, despite being heavily intoxicated, feel a desire to offer contributions to the website. When that last remaining brain cell is swimming in a soup of beer, Red Bull and Vodka and just won't go to sleep there will be an option to resort to the Drunk Tab for random incoherent posting. I'm requesting this as a personal favor....

Hi, A while ago I started working for a kids learning centre, which after two weeks just wasn't working out for me - loads of travel to different places, and a lack of prep time was stressing me out. As it was still my trial month as agreed, (and they said they'd pay me for the trial month) I thought it better to leave sooner rather than later so they could find someone else. The boss then refused to pay me for any hours so far worked (total of about 259 USD, goes a long way here!) and said I had known this would be the deal, also saying I should pay them for damage to their reputation. It was pretty hostile and felt like the only reason they wouldn't pay me was because they were angry - seems a bit unprofessional! I was just wanting to know: has this sort of thing happened to an...

Anyone else been cold-called by the Vietnamese Teaching Group recently? I've had two calls in two days and am wondering how widespread it is. I admire their initiative, but not sure that they'll get the response they're after. I was pretty pissed off at being phoned during work hours, especially the second time when I'd made it clear that after 8 years in Vietnam I really didn't need VN classes. I'd also like to know how they got my number. The guy on the phone just said that he got it off the internet - but I really don't know how? What, he googled 'Hanoi expat mobile number'? Anyone from VTG on here who would like to explain?

How do you measure your consumption of BEER? I know some measure it by glasses consumed, others by cans or bottles, a vague few by litres. Do you measure your consumption on a daily or weekly basis? I had a little joke tonight, where I said I only drank one can of beer. That, that can of beer happened to be a 5 lt mini keg of Dortmund beer, is a glossed over fact. Usually I use litres. 3l, time to go home... 5lt, time to find some place to crash... (door step, tree, hotel reception, etc.) Over to you. p.s. this is not a pissing contest, I'm genuinely curious about the 'heavy hitters' out there.

I was recently in HCM and was pleasantly surprised at the clean streets, clean shops, well parked bikes in lines and plenty of space to walk on the pavement, never a crazy bike riding on the pavement, little street vendors and if any, who kept to a spot(tidy) and didn't huddle in the pedestrian traffic or following tourists persistently, very well behaved taxi drivers with decent meters even from the less renowned companies, polite staff in most establishment and NEVER anyone sleeping on the floor in any official establishment or shop Of course, I don't mean that HCM was spotless but has its urban decay as all cities in the world ...... Why is Hanoi so different ? !, after 4 years living here I am still in state of denial by the daily downs as I love the place and the people but str...
