I have just moved to Hanoi with my husand. While he is working, I was thinking of doing some correspondence courses. Has anyone done anything similar?
I have been invited to a rather fancy Independence Day event and have mixed feelings about accepting. I have been to a few events in the past where I was the token Tay videoed and photographed for whatever purpose (had my face on TV on one occasion and have no idea what the newsreader was saying) I am not sure whether to accept this event invitation or not. On the one hand I feel honoured to have been invited BUT, I don't really know much about what the day REALLY symbolises for Vietnamese and therefore what it REALLY means to have a Tay there supporting the celebrations.
Does anyone know of something worth attending on National Day. Im keen on guns and stuff. Is there a military parade?
What can I do when a center doesn't want to pay ma salary and ignore me or give me excuses not to help me? It's that man now... but he is not there or doesn't want to contact me anymore. Nothing I suppose, even if I had a 6 months contract they didn't respect. Supposed to pay me after 4 weeks of teaching, every month, they gave me 3 weeks in 4-5 months to teach, one or two classes per week and finally nothing after. Was ok at the beginning, paying my transportation and hotel, but they change their management. Just hope nobody else gets in trouble with IQ and EQ Center in Bac Giang city.
Hi!! I hope I don't insult anyone with my blatant ignorance here, but here goes anyways... The apt I just moved into has a shelf over the television (i've seen these in many places around here). This shelf is filled with candles, fake money, incense (that-i'm sorry-but smells terrible) and even a box of cookies. (not to mention lots of dust) I'm aware that this is a religious display/shrine, but what does it all mean?? Is it absolutely rude for me to clean it up/take some things down? Will some god (s)/spirit (s) haunt my Hanoi-days forever if I do?? Will I seriously insult the owner if he came into the apt with these offerings altered? Thanks in advance!
Hi I'm a computer looser - clueless when it comes to mega RAM and Giggs and stuff like that. Just to prove a point I went and bought myself a new state of the art Mac Book Pro (without ever having used a Mac before) It's all very nice and shiny , nice machine but I don't know how to drive it. I feel like I'm behind the wheel of a Rolls Royce but can't get out of first gear (not bad in Hanoi traffic I guess!) Anyway....in exchange for lunch and a coffee I'm looking for someone who will take me through the basics of how to use (and I mean 'basics') of the wonderful world of Mac. Maybe an hour or two of your time will be sufficient to set me in the right direction. Cheers Daragh
I'm moving to a new house that doesn't have car access (narrow alley off doi can). I don't have that much stuff (a couple suitcases), but enough that I won't be able to carry it all. I was thinking of getting one of those guys who drives a tuk tuk to help me get it over there, but all of sudden none to be found. Does anyone have the number for a trusted tuk tuk or other small vehicle owner who might be interested in making a few extra dong?
Ok final DA question for July. Tomorrow is the eclipse - does any one know what time? I googled it, but kept getting everything BUT the exact time. Just curious ... Also, are their any superstitions in Vietnam re: an eclipse. I read some countries believe pregnant women should stay inside and some other stories, so curious if there are any here.
I've searched for a good place that does facials under the spa tab of Top Spots and I'm not really sold on any one place. The reviews are mixed. I've searched ANH for more info, but nothing comes up under facial. So, where is the best place with a reasonable price to get a facial in Ba Dinh? maybe Tay Ho... I don't want to spend $30 on a facial, but I also don't want a super cheap one either. I'm looking for a nice facial for a reasonable price. I've tried Fancy Spa and they aren't bad, but I liked the Aesthetic Institute better. I'm just looking for a place that is closer than the Aesthetic Institute - similar in price (a little more is okay). Any recommendations?
Does anyone know if the clothing label 'Element' is available in any Hanoi stores?
(thank god we are moving out of here...) Our landlords found out our building had termites a few weeks ago. They called the exterminators (just a small group of local women, not very professional) and they came and put these cardboard boxes all over the house. Today the exterminators came back and opened the boxes, put orange powder (some kind of poison) in the boxes and on Tuesday they are supposed to come back to remove them. They left a mess of powdered orange stuff on the floors and on the boxes and told me to wipe it up... I'm worried it's arsenic and read that if thats the case then its higly toxic if touched, inhaled, or swallowed. can anybody shed some light on this? We're thinking about going to hotel until they can sort this out...
Hi, does anybody know where to get Chinotto and dehumidifier in Hanoi? My boyfriend needs them dearly.
... is The New Hanoian's Q&A forum. If you've got a question about life in Hanoi that you think you should pose to someone in the know, here is the place to do it.
