How are the roads from Hanoi to HCMC? Without sightseeing along the way, how long would it take to drive down on average? (Flying is not an option, nor is rail). Any information would be appreciated! Thanks.

I have heard that, having beeped three times, a driver is no longer liable for hitting someone / something with their vehicle. Is there any truth in this?

One day about a week ago, I went into a shop that had the full range of colours in mac mineral liquid make up. On eof those little shops that has things in glass door cupboards. I was sure I was on Ly Quoc Su. I didn't buy any cos I didn't have enough cash on me. Now I want to buy some, the shop has disappeared. I walked all the way up Ly Quoc Su, all the way down Nha chang, then tried Hang Trong in case I'd got the wrong end of Nha Tho, ( I was on my way home from CO tailors. This has happened before to me. How can this be? Is there a black hole? Or do I simply imagine these shops and have imaginary conversations about colours with imaginary people? Can anyone pleae tell me if they have seen this shop and where it is? Not only so I can get the make up but to reassure me I'm not going m...

Anyone know where to get Synthroid in Ha Noi? I've got some with me, with perscription, but like to plan ahead. BTW - synthroid is a thyroid med. - used when you don't make your own.

Here is an interesting article for all you teetotalers out there for dealing with a crowded bar scene. It's written from the point of view of a bartender so I guess it has some real credibility and usefulness.

Before you answer that question, I should make it clear that I'm not asking about toilets where the room can accommodate more than one person doing their unmentionables at the same time - clearly, you should stick to your designated sex's restrooms when it's those types of facilities (although you can probably get a pass in extreme emergencies, or in seedy nightclubs). No, I'm talking about what you commonly find here - two small rooms side by side that only take one poo-er/wee-er/poo-er&wee-er at a time. One's marked male, one's marked female. When I first got here, if the male toilet was occupied, I'd wait for it to free up, even if the female stall wasn't being used. However, I stopped being so discriminating after several occasions when it turned out that I'd been waiting patientl...

I would like to know whether would be possible to exchange English lessons for wood carving lessons in one of the artisan villages surrounding Hanoi? Or even just pay for the wood carving lessons. I know that this is a craft not easily mastered in a few months, but I would really like to give it a shot. Not sure how useful English lessons would be to craftsmen such as these, but possibly their kids??

Hey Everyone! Australian Electronic/Latin/NuJazz/Hiphop outfit 'Red Bantoo' are flying in to Hanoi on the 7th of May to perform at a festival on the 8th of May. They fly back to Australia on the 15th of May. We are bringing over a three-piece outfit that consists of live keys/synths, MPC/beats and a female jazz vocalist. Can anyone recommend some premier live music venues that host international live music? We could play a Sunday chill session, for example, on the 10th, as well as any evenings midweek and Friday the 14th. To hear or watch the live show online check out: Also if anyone knows any decent jazz horn players or percussionists, let them know we're coming and to drop me a line vi...

A couple of days ago I was riding home along the Dyke road to Tay Ho when a local guy on a bike just in front of me lost control , dropped the bike and himself and went face first into the dyke wall. Just to make matters worse his bike collected another guy walking on the sidewalk. The driver’s helmet, a plastic replica of the WW11German Army style, was not done up so it sailed off him leaving his head totally unprotected. All this occurred in an instant. Against by better instincts I drove on, not stopping, recalling the Asian expat adage; “If there is a foreigner in sight – he caused it and will therefore pay money to everyone.” (Cynical pr*ck that I am.) Now, I have ridden bikes of all sizes, off and on, for more years than I care to admit to, and in those years avoided quite a numb...

Have you been on a day trip to Dong Ho village to look at the woodblock paintings? Apparently they hold markets for Tet celebrations around this time of year, but I'm not sure of the dates. From my Internet research there doesn't seem to be many tours heading that way. I was thinking of doing a day trip there in my car. Any recommendations, shops to visit etc?
