I am looking for an acupuncture specialist. I have heard there is a really good lady here in Ha Noi that a lot of expats use but I can't get her address. Help appreciated.

I am currently trying to find work teaching English in Hanoi. I have a couple of interviews arranged already, but I'm a little worried about the work permit/business visa regulations... Which do I need? How do I get one? (and how do I get a Criminal Record certificate from the UK, if needed, when I'm already in Hanoi?) How long does it take? Can I legally work whilst the application is in process? So many questions, sorry! Thanks, Nick

Are there any Jewish ex-pats in Ha Noi? Seen lots of stuff for Catholic and other services but wondered if there were any Jews out there or rather here in Ha Noi. If you're here I'd love to make contact.

So, I posted a note in the personal section last night using the "Strictly friends" category, which is my genuine interest. Within a few hours I had received quite a number of responses, many from "local girls", some of which raised my eyebrows ever so slightly. I don't want to make any assumptions, because I imagine the language barrier causes some misunderstandings and misreadings but i'm curious to hear if anyone has any insight into making friends via the personals sections. I'm here for work for a few months and would enjoy a social life outside my professional obligations. My colleague, who is from Hanoi, has gently cautioned me regarding unscrupulous types who "take advantage of expats". I don't want to spend my time worrying about honest interactions, so I thought I would se...

What is the best color(male) to wear for visiting someone's home during TET ? I understand black is out. How about blue or red ? I don't want to offend anyone.

Dear all, new hanoian is a great forum to share experiences, just want to thank all for their input! Anyway, now I would like to put up an issue! During my stay here for 6 month, I noted a radical change on my body and on my health. For example, my face skin has gone completely back to puperty-stage, and I talked to my friends about this issue and they also seem to struggle with the air/pollution in Hanoi being harsh to their skin. Furthermore, I noticed that my teeth, eyes, throat etc. going through changes due to the food, air, climate, pollution etc. Well, not only the examples above but also after talking to friends about how their body and well being has been set on a test, I just wanted to ask you guys about your experiences in Vietnam...

So there is currently a gap between the black market buy/sell rate and the bank buy/sell rate for USD and Dong. I'm just curious, what's to stop me from taking $1000USD to the black market, selling it for 17200 Dong/dollar, then going the bank, buying back my dollars at 16200, and doing it all again? What am I missing?

Hi everyone, My husband has been an English teacher in Hanoi for nearly 2 years. We're looking for an online social group like Facebook for expats who are living and teaching here in Hanoi to join and share their experience regarding useful teaching methods, materials, horror stories, and opportunities in the city. Is anyone currently following an only group like this on facebook which we can join. If there's already a community, great. Otherwise, we'll put one together.

Winner winner chicken dinner. So, I'm probably one of the poorer NH's, but I must admit the casino ads have me intrigued (I play the hell out of some paigow). I know Movenpick has the Win Casino, plus there's another one elsewhere. What I am not clear on is if these are worth it for a fun night out. They're for "foreign passport holders only," but they don't make clear if these are actually just for fun or if you can win real cash. They also don't list in their ads about the games available besides slots. Anyone with experience or the inside scoop, enlighten us.

ok, I been here about a year and a half now, and after selling my old computer, I had some money burning a hole in my pocket, so I treated myself to some random shopping I bought 4 flag/banners that I have seen around town, and have always thought were beautiful. Problem is I showed them to a Viet friend and he told me they are only for Pagodas and Temples ... can anyone clarify for me? Would it be bad form or offensive to hang these inside or outside my house on Bach Dang street? one is fairly square shaped, flame shapes around the outside, wwith red, then blue, then yellow, then green, in squares towards the middle the second is rectangular, with stripes or blue, orange, white, yellow, and squares of the same colour at the end i was really hoping these were the old ...

So I dropped my nice Sony Ericsson mobile phone on its head yesterday and now the screen is a complete blank. Everything else seems to function normally - but I can't see what I'm doing. Anybody know if there is hope for my phone? Does anybody know of a mobile phone REPAIR shop in Hanoi?

Hi, I am not Vietnamese, and have been asked to work over Tet by my Vietnamese employer. Does anyone have experience working during Tet as a non-Vietnamese person? Should I be getting overtime? I worked over Christmas and any other UK holidays and didn't expect special treatment because they are UK national holidays. So should I expect the same as a local in Hanoi? If they amazingly agreed to work the holiday would they get overtime? I see wads of cash being dished out around the office, but I am not expecting a 13th month bonus as the bold 'no bonus' in my contract keeps reminding me. But what about overtime, or is this greedy seeing as I get paid more than locals anyway? If anyone was here last year, it would be great to hear what your experiences were. I wan...
