Hi Hanoians, we have started a facegroup group for Micro Brew/Craft Beer/ Wine Tasting meetups : Till now I know all the various micro-brewery in Hanoi and some Beer bars like Beer Temple, Chai Beer, Kaiser Kafee, RRTR who carry decent numbers of hard to find foreign beers. Apart from these, are there any other beer bars/pubs in hanoi, who carry decent number of craft beers or other hard to find premium foreign beers ?

Where can I blacklist bad landlords here on the site? I just had the most Horrific experience with a landlord and a housing contract. They suddenly asked for much more money while I stayed for some days and the contract had to be made in a few days. Once the contract was there, everything was a scam. When I refused to sign they forced me to pay 100$ for just a few days. When I refused they got so angry and threatened me by delivering me to the police. These people are working for the ministery of justice so they can do everything they want they said. Eventually I got away with paying less, but it took a long time to be released. These guys must be blacklisted. Do NOT ever rent the house on Doi can street alley 379 nr 24a and 24b!!!!

I am interested to work in vietnam and have been looking into the requirements for work permit and one of the requirements is to be free of criminal record. How strict are they on this? if you have any previous offence is it a dead end? I have a minor theft offence from 16 years ago when I was a teenager that i just got a small fine for. Will this cause me problems?

I've noticed an increasing tendency lately among the reviews and some 'answers' to questions to be basically puff pieces (propaganda) for someone's business, e.g. fantastic cheese products bring the latest example. 5-star 'reviews' of the business by the business. I realise things slip through the net, I guess I should flag stuff more but I mostly goggle, no google. Is it just me imaging this trend? Shouldn't the mods punch more people, virtually?

Why do so many members of this site take the time to critique and put down peoples legitimate questions?

I enjoy perusing the New Hanoian while I have coffee in the morning and before bed at night, recently a majority of what I see is negativity towards new-comers posted and belittling comments.

Why do so many of you feel the need to put down others?

I have 4 new spots to this site but after checking I find that all of them are still in the mode of "unverified" even though some of them were added months ago. So what's the criteria for a spot to move from Unverified to verified? How long does it take? Is unverified spots not listed in the Top Spots search? I can't find the spots I added by searching for it in Top Spots.

I spent two hours in the old quarter recently searching for a Japanese (style) pull saw to no avail. I find there is no substitute for cutting precision dovetails. Can I find a Japanese pull saw in Vietnam or will I have to order it from abroad? Any tips on where I might find one would be much appreciated. Secondly, I am looking for finishing products such as amber shellac, brushing lacquer and boiled linseed oil. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find these products? A bow in advance for your help. Zenkarma

I’m a bit confused about the rules for the classifieds after reading the overview and would like some guidance after having two posts deleted. My questions are this: 1) Am I using the classifieds section incorrectly? If so, what can I do differently? Or, is what I have posted just too inappropriate for the classifieds section? 2) Does anyone have any advice on how to post what I want without it being taken down? I’m an English teacher who happens to be interested in hypnosis / NLP and other psychology techniques (mainly by being captivated by Derren Brown back in the UK for many years) and have been trying to find out how they work. I’ve posted on the classifieds three times in the last 6 months and twice I had my classified deleted, yet I’m not sure what I did wrong. First p...

Hey I am really tired of ads of married man looking for Vietnamese girls just for fun or NSA. is there any other way to classify them and put them in one separate type so girls who look for serious & sincere relationship don't have to waste her time and feel bad like angry birds reading all those craps? someone tells me how to contact admin people of this website for such a suggestion? Do you agree with my idea, anyway? Thanks for reading my odd question & comment.

Within the past 24 hours, TNH site has gone incredibly wonky on my iPad, so I'm curious if it is my device, or if it is the site. Oddly, the only page within TNH where I am having trouble is the homepage. I'm not having issues on any other site, just this one. Banners are a mess, and icons are in incorrect places- like words where "star ratings" should be. Any ideas?

I find the latest activity stream ridiculously uninformative. Half of it is stuff I couldn't give a rat's about - and I have to spend 5 minutes deleting notifications to get to what I want to know about, ie. who's responded to my thread/answer or given me props, or what people I'm interested in have said on threads I'm following. Can't there be some kind of weighting system? If here is, it's badly out of kilter. If someone commented on your post, surely that should goes to the top of the list? Particularly if it's a user you're following. If they gave you props, that should get a high priority too? If a user you're following says something or leaves props, that should be up in lights as well. At present, it seems as though at least half the notifications I receive are because users ...

Why are people allowed to review establishments even though they have had no direct experience with them? I was looking at the reviews for Singapore International. A guy gives the place 1 star because he had some kind of road argument with the driver of one of the school's buses. Another reviewer throws in another star simply based on what she has heard from other people. These are just examples, plenty more can be found (VIP bikes has a few if I remember correctly). Since there are specific rules regarding review posting, shouldn't there also be one to prevent people from reviewing places they don't directly know? Also, I would see it as really helpful if a requirement for every review was for the reviewer to actually state what kind of experience s/he had with the place. Thin...

We all know it's possible to rate spots. However, what if I want to warn others not to buy the crappy model of motorbike I bought, or extol the virtues of the marvellous Truc Bach beer? Would it be possible to have a new section that reviews products? I think with some regulations as to what can be posted*, this would be a very useful section of the website. It could be categorised to make it an even more valuable source of information, and users could add outlets or shops that sell the product that they know of, in much the same way as they add tags. What do you guys think? *only items that could possibly be relevant to the Hanoian community, eg. a review of a Big Mac wouldn't cut it, although Coca Cola would, as it's available here
