Hi, I'm looking for larger puppets to use in my kindergarten classes. I especially want one to use as my 'co-teacher', something like a monkey or other easily recognised animal. Any help in where to get one would be ace. Thanks.

They're not 'large' but L's Place (on Xuan Dieu & at The Garden) sell hand puppets - various recognisable and unrecognisable animals available. I think they sell for about 70 000.

Have you roamed the Old Quarter? I bought some adorable cloth puppets recently (sorry, I don't have a store/street name!). There were all kinds of animals (water buffalo, elephant, bear, etc...) and they were cheap (but well made)!. After my initial purchase, I have since seen many other similar stores that carry them. They are usually displayed either hanging up altogether, dangling from the roof near the entrance of shops, or in a basket. The stores that often carry them are typically the same stores that carry the cloth bags, bamboo placemats, etc. If your Vietnamese isn't swell, maybe you could draw a picture or look up the word for "puppet" and ask someone down there to direct you? Good luck!

Son Son shop on Ba Be (on same side as Le Pub going South, but before you get to the HSBC cash point) have the cloth hand puppets mentioned above. They are just hand puppets though, not larger as you are looking for.

Can only think of the large dragons that you can buy on paper street, or buy a big soft toy on Toy St and cut a hole in, remove stuffing and sew a long sun glove into the slit....

Any updates on where to pickup hand puppets?

Toy street continues to stock mostly hand-puppet sized puppets for 60k. There's one particular place where they have a large den of plush toys out the back, and the owner has giant plastic bags full of them. I'll try grab the address next time I'm out that way.

One other good option is to check Lazada, which is where I may end up sourcing puppets with moveable mouths. Search: "con rối tay".
