Anyone know where to buy a good road map of Vietnam? Ideally, one of the book-types that has really detailed roads for the whole country. Otherwise, just something that will get me down to Saigon with minimum fuss and allow me to get off the main roads once in a while without getting too lost.

Tried a search already but maybe this has been answered?? If so, my apologies...

Bought a good road map recently at bookworm. They have a small selection of maps at their downstairs section.

To elaborate on ngochubm85's answer, the Cartographic Publishing House even sells topographical maps of Vietnam, which are so detailed, not only do they show every road and trail in Vietnam, they even show every HOUSE in the rural areas.

I've also found that google Earth's map of Vietnam are also quite good (whereas outside of the major cities, google maps is quite poor).

But if you want a map because you want to go for some nice drives, DO NOT buy a detailed map, just buy the atlas shown above. Only buy a detailed map if you need to find a specific road to get to someone's house.

Most Vietnamese roads are terrible. I've found out the hard way that any road that isn't shown as a major road in the atlas isn't worth driving on.

Twice I've been worried I would die driving on roads shown on maps.

In fact, the atlas lists 4 types of roads and I've learned to only drive on the top 2 types of roads and avoid all others.

If I were to navigate using anything more detailed than the atlas, I'd probably find myself on the road that would kill me.

OK -- Thank you all for your helpful answers. I'll try to get a hold of the atlas mentioned above.
