Heading home ... and looking to send about 10 medium/large boxes (probably about 15-30kg per box) of personal effects (books, kitchen stuff, DVDs, clothes, etc.), no furniture. Does anyone have any good experience of shipping companies that will do this (and not cost more than the contents are worth)? Speed is not an issue, 3 months by surface (sea) would be fine. I asked at the Post Office (at Ho Hoan Kiem), but they said VND5,850,000 (US$250) for a 20Kg box. That was the cheapest rate!
What Vietnamese slang words do you use? I am trying to learn tiếng Việt, but I think the language teached is very formal. What people speak on the street seems to be quite an other language. So please post some words or phrases of 'slang' and their translations. I already have some young Vietnamese friends on social media. What are some 'simplified' expressions used by the youth today in SMS or internet chat?
I have a 900 watt UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that I bought and have been using in China. Plugging it in to a 2 wire socket here in Hanoi and I am getting no power, only a "UPS Off" message. The electricity in China and Vietnam are supposed to be exactly the same, 220v/50hz, however I am wondering if the UPS is refusing to function because of the lack of a dedicated ground wire at the socket. Anyone else using a UPS in Vietnam? Does it function without a ground wire? Did you buy the UPS here in Vietnam?
Hi, I lost my original degree certificate and didn't have time to get a replacement before I came to Vietnam. My university sent the replacement to my old address, and I've got someone to post it out to Hanoi. After doing some reading online it appears that sending anything to Vietnam isn't advised. Reading lots of stories of valuable items being stolen, lost, taking months to show up, etc. Feeling a bit stupid 'cause obviously it's pretty valuable and my university can only provide 1 replacement. I also need it ASAP to start the work permit application. What are the chances of it arriving? It's being posted from the UK by the way, if that makes a difference.
Hi, I wonder if anyone can share about what do you like to read about Vietnam or Vietnamese people? I'm reading reviews about books about Vietnam/Vietnamese people, such as: Ru by Kim Thuy, No man's Land by Duong Thu Huong, "The Beauty of Humanity Movement" by Camilla Gibb, etc and wonder if anyone can share some others. Also what do you like to read about Vietnam or Vietnamese people which you think have not been written yet? (I'm asking since I'm nurturing an idea to write a book). Thanks, Khuyen
"i made my own bed...." I was stupid. I need an english speaking lawyer in or near bac kan. I speak some vietnamese but not enough for this. Hey guys, I have been interested in teaching English in Vietnam for years, however I'm finding it really difficult in finding genuine job advertisements. There seem to be a lot of fake job adverts posted in Australia. Any advice regarding this would be great. If anyone knows of any real work going that would be even better. I have four years teaching experience in Australia and would prefer to teach up north, however not fussy.TIA.
Why are there still so little electric motorbikes/scooters in Vietnam? I see them all over the place in China and can't help but think that there is great potential for them in Vietnam as well. Economic benefits for the consumer and ecologic and health benefits for everybody are just too obvious. However I have not done my market research thoroughly yet (obviously, as I am posting this question to TNH). Anyone up for taking on this business challenge? I am bringing good logistics, battery, government and civil society knowledge/relations to the table.
Hello there, I know this question has been asked frequently, but I'd like to know if I can find a job at a lower tier school in Vietnam in the following situation: - I am Dutch Born, 23 y/o, Caucasian, man. - I have a TEFL online 120 hour certificate - I have the Dutch equivalent to a British college degree in chemistry. - I have a completion document for the first year of a bachelor in International Business Management and I'm in my third year (will finish in 2016). - I recently scored an 8 on the IELTS exam (I only had 20 days to prepare and didn't prepare for speaking and writing) - My wife is Vietnamese - I'm staying in Ho Chi Minh city for 6 months for a project (not a tourist). Is there any chance I can get +/- 40 teaching hours a week if I actively look for classes...
I am looking for CURRENT information about opening a bank account. I plan to deposit my monthly salary in USD then, in June 2016, transfer the total savings to a GBP sterling account in the UK. I have a work permit and payslips, although my payslips pre-date the start of my work permit by several months. Preferably, I would like to make a single international BACS transfer- does anyone have any information regarding banking fees related to this service? Any other info on how to get money out of Vietnam and back to the UK without losing out on exorbitant bank fees or unfavorable exchange rates would be really helpful. Monthly salary is paid in USD, bank in the UK is GBP. Anyone? Total transfer amount in June 2016 will be around $16,200 or $1,800 monthly. Thanks in advance!
"I am looking for a rowing club in or near Ho Chi Minh City. I am a rowing coach with 25 years of coaching experience in Columbus, OH, Boston, Seattle, and Cleveland, OH. I will be visiting Phan Thiet and Ho Chi Minh City for three weeks in December. The Vietnamese National Team trains in Hanoi, per what I have read so far, but I was wondering if there are any other clubs, casual or competitive, training farther south? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
