Its your typical comfort food place. If you are from the states, think Denny's. Food doesn't wow you but its decent. But for the price there are much better options out there, especially for pizza.

Meh, not a big fan. Went there for the meetup and was awesome. But went again during the weekday and it was dead. Ordered kebabs, fries and coronas. Coronas were awesome, but the kebabs tasted strange and the fries were soggy.

Foodshop 45 is great at what its supposed to be, an inexpensive authentic indian restaurant. The food is great, especially for the price. Could it be better? Possibly. But it could also be way more expensive. First time, I had Tandoori Chicken, Beef Vindoo, 2 orders of cheese bread, 2 glasses of wine and dessert and got out for under 300k(yes i'm a fatty but it was for 2!). Second time, right at 200k fr 2 without dessert and wine.

Came here to try some authentic Russian/Ukrainian food and was not disappointed. The dumplings are amazing here. Also had the mushroom stuffed chicken which was good, but its enough food for two to share one dish. 5 dishes, 3 drinks = 320k. Will definitely be back for more!

Its refreshing to see a restaurant where you can tell the owner takes pride and joy in the establishment. The pizza is amazing, as is the wait staff. Can't really add anything more than someone else has already said but its a definite must see before you leave Hanoi.

Hi,
New here to Hanoi and looking for a stylist who specializes in fades, any suggestions?
Okay, I'm used to eating Pho with Hoisin Sauce and I can't find any here. The strangest thing is that i can't remember any restaurant I've eaten at in the US that didn't have hoisin sauce. Yet here, in the birthplace of Pho, they have none. Anyone know where I can get some?
Whats your vote for the best pizza in Hanoi?
Anyone know of beginner hip hop dance classes going on in Hanoi?
Okay, the end all question to tipping in which scenario do you tip here in Hanoi? And how much?
1. You are eating at Luna D'Autunno and the bill comes out to 500,000 dong.
2. You are drinking at Dragonfly and order a round of shots for everyone, the bill comes out to 150,000 dong.
3. You are eating at the local Pho joint and the bill comes out to 120,000 for 4 of you.
4. You are drinking coffee at Trung Nguyen with some pals and the bill comes out to 120,000.
5. You go to get a haircut at Daewoo Hotel's barbershop for $7, they include a food massage, neck massage and shave. Who do you tip, and what amount?
6. You go to a legit massage parlor and get a hour rubdown for 180,000 dong.
7. You take a taxi cab ride with Hanoi Taxi and the fare comes out to 70,000 dong.
Feel free to add anything else I missed.

I knew my life would change coming to Hanoi, but I didn't think it would change that much. Pho without hoisin sauce! thats like a hamburger without the bun! Thanks for the info, I'll check out the two places and see if I can get some there.

Just to update, Tried out the hair place at Hanoi Towers. Joe Tan wasn't there, on vacation supposedly(tried calling back 2 more times these past 2 months and always "on vacation in Singapore, will be back in 3 weeks") so I had an extremely attractive woman do my hair. She didn't quite butcher it, but it was obvious that she was uncomfortable doing my hair. The actual haircut I give a 5 out of 10, everything else was great though.
So next up was Daewoo and even though it was a smallish barber shop he did quite an excellent job. I would give this one a 7.5 out of 10. Also I paid $7, I didn't get the foot massage though so I don't know if it had any bearing.
Bear in mind, my hair is extremely hard to cut. My hair grows in quite a few different directions and few people can cut it right.

Viettel will be bringing the BlackBerry 8700, BlackBerry 8800, BlackBerry 8100 and BlackBerry 8320 to Vietnam this October. The 4,000 devices on the way will be the first shipment Vietnam sees, and Veittel is lined up to be the sole distributer in the long run.
I have a blackberry also, but I have no idea how to set up the email. If you figure it out, shoot me over an email. It would be useful. Mine is unlocked, so I can use the opera function, phone, text. But i have no idea on email alerts/transfers and blackberry messenger.

I would recommend any of the USB(not analog) DSP Plantronics headsets. I am not sure if you can get them in Vietnam but I used Plantronics headsets for the last 8 years for both VoIP and PC gaming. Sennheiser is also good, I have never owned one but tried them out and they seem very good and I've seen someone using Sennheiser earphones here so they might be available here.

Well just in case other people do a search on best pizza and want to know the verdict. Luna D'autunno is legend... wait for it.. dary. The pizza is amazing and for $120k dong per pizza($7 US per), I'd gladly pay the price. For 3, we got out for 520,000($30 US.) with appetizers and drinks. This is by far, my favorite restaurant in Hanoi now. Can't wait to try the pasta!

I've only been here two months but here are my take on things.
Hoan Kiem/Old Quarter = kind of the college, post college drinking area. Backpackers, cheap hotels, cheap beer, souvenirs etc. Seems like the most fun to live in.
Westlake/Tay Ho = the 30-40's area, more upscale, better restaurants, foreign restaurants. Quieter neighborhood better set for couples and families without children.
Ba Dinh = The political district, mostly locals, very quiet. Most likely where everyone works who isn't a teacher.
Ciputra(spellings probably off) = never been here, but its supposed to be the city that can be anywhere. Built like a western suburb, you don't really need to leave the confines of the area to survive, other than for work. Wealthy expats that work in Hanoi can be found here.
As for getting scammed, ripped off. Unless you consider getting charged 6k(roughly .30c) dong instead of 2k(roughly .10c) dong for watching your motorbike, I haven't seen any instances of scamming/petty theft.

I have a different point of view than most but this might help you. In terms of buying a bike, it is cheaper to buy one but you might want to actually take a few days to xe om your way around the city because walking(crossing the street) and riding around the city is an adventure in itself and you want to acclimate yourself to the city and drivers before risking your life(buy a good helmet!).
With lodging, I suggest maybe living in one of the monthly rental hotels for the first month(around hoan kiem, and do the touristy thing). Either that or do your research diligently on more permanent living conditions. You will notice that most people's problems here involve pesky landlords, being cheated by landlords, etc. The other thing is, personally, I think you probably want to make sure you like who you are going to live with before shelling out a lot of cash(if you decide the roommate route). More importantly, you want to find people you can trust, not the type that you feel like a prisoner in your own home(having to lock the room to your door, hiding valuables, etc.)
Certain things here are more expensive than back home, i.e. cell phone(make sure to get one that is unlockable over here), designer clothing, books.
Medically, the fees are not bad. I dislocated my shoulder a month into my stay here and the MRI was $100 and the X-ray was around $5, pain and swelling medication was $30.

Not sure if you are from the US but Big C has a Walmart feel to it. You go there to buy one thing but end up with tons of stuff! None of the stuff is great, but it does the job. A few days ago I went to buy bread, which by the way is awesome there. I ended up with a bath brush, pillow, frosted flakes(thailand frosties), a tennis racket looking electric fly swatter, pickles, and a badminton set(because of all the talk of locals playing it).
