I've been there twice. The first time we pre arranged the menu and it was great. The second time we just turned up and it was good but not as good.
It's a nice alternative to the same ol' stuff and I'd go back in the near future.

about the venue: Studio

This sh*t is so funny. Look at the 3 positive reviews below from the sweet looking chicks.

Now 2 are really hot looking western girls, not really the norm in asia once you get away from the beaches.

The third girl has the biggest sunglasses i have ever seen. In fact they remind me of an astronauts visor.

So on further inspection all three reviewers have only posted one review each and only of the studio.

If you click into "Carol"s profile(if that is your real name) you can see the registered email address is for martin.guar@yahoo.fr

As my British buddy would say "Martin, you MUPPET"

One star cause you a cheating ****

Just want to thank you for the personal touch of service.
A wonderfully cozy place after a hard day at work for me...
Honestly, I cant wait until my next trip down for an energizing body massage.
Indeed, I guess my body cant thank me enough from the last amazing treat at your place.
Wish you all the best,
Suzie

about the venue: Ha Hoi Restaurant

I first walked past Ha Hoi Restaurant 7 months ago and thought it looked okay, though a little upmarket, and made a note to come back sometime when that is what I was looking for. Last Monday I was looking for something less celubrious but found myself walking past this restaurant again. A quick look at the menu outside and I thought it worth a shot.

I could only see 2 couples already seated when I entered for dinner. The building and decor are nice, romantic even.

As I was on my own I kept dinner brief. Two Nem Cuon Tom Thit (cuon style spring roll), Nom Bo Hou Choui (beef), Cha Muc Ha Long (Halong style squid)and a Bia Ha Noi to wash it down.

Bia Ha Noi is something I like to see in a restaurant (or anywhere)and is a very easy drinking fluid. It should not be confused with Hanoi Beer which is supposedly 'premium' and a little higher octane. Same brewer but different flavours. There was also a fairly typical range of beers and wines, so something for everyone.

The spring rolls were fine, the beef good and I really enjoyed the Halong style squid which are a minced patty style of presentation. I wasnt staying long and the meal was enough, but if I was focused on a dinner with friends another course would have been good.

My meal cost 159kvnd which was very reasonable. The menu seemed to suggest that VAT would be an additional charge but I was only charged the net menu rate. Even so the extra 10% wouldn't hurt too much.

A party of, I think, French arrived while I was there and it was good to have a little more bustle in the place.

So the food was good, the service was good and the value very good. Nice style/decor and two separated eating areas so it felt intimate even with a group in the other area. I am confused why it wasnt busier - maybe the time of year or statistical fluctuation...

Worth a try. I'll go again with a friend or two.

about the venue: Santal Spa

The Santal Spa is decorated nicely and is very relaxing from the moment you enter. The helpful staff immediately is attentive to your needs and provides you with hot tea.

I had a tour of the place which was really nice and makes you forget the busy street outside of the shop.

I had a facial and was very pleased. The spa uses Sothy products from France and has a well-trained staff. This is one of the better facials I have had and is equivalent with the better ones that I have had in America.

The Santal Spa is more expensive than most spas in Hanoi but it is still a fraction of the price of American and European spas.

about the venue: Hachiryu Ramen (Quan My Tam Rong)

This is a small place which is almost always empty. That might not be the best recommendation but it does decent Japanese style fried noodles, gyoza dumplings and draft beer. There are other things on the menu, but my Japanese reading skills are non existent so I'm not sure what they all are.

It's under a hotel, and isn't the most exciting place to go but it's good for a snack. Worth checking out if you live in the area, as it's pretty reasonable and there's not that much choice around.

about the venue: Kiti Restaurant

Went here for the first time tonight. I'm always a little wary of places that have large menus which span more than one cuisine, but Kiti does a better job than most.

I ordered the T-Bone steak as I was in the mood for some filling western fare. The portion size was pretty good - the steak covered half the plate. It was pretty tender but I was expecting something a little tastier. The salad and chips which accompanied the steak were pretty standard. My girlfriend's dish was an pretty average tasting stir-fried squid dish. The Hue spring rolls wrapped in egg were original and pretty tasty though.

I'd rate this place a three were it not for the excellent service. If only more places could have service like this - not fussy, just polite and efficient.

Oh, and they make a decent Daquiri too.

Thanks for the tip.
The Pho Cuon is indeed very good. Tried the Muc Xao Can Toi as well and it was good enough.

about the venue: Tes Decor

I visited today and had alot of trouble finding the shop - I was expecting a much larger place, I guess, than the small shopfront, also the small "tes" sign is hidden by trees and the very high sign cannot be seen simply driving by.Hint-look for the light display in the window.
There were two floors with a few nice pieces on display.I felt the current stock suited Vietnamese tastes.
The staff were indeed friendly and helpful and I enjoyed looking though the catalogues and wide range of materials and beautiful upholstery fabric. If the catalogue photos are able to be successfully replicated then it would be possible to obtain some very nice signature pieces.
I was quoted $1500 usd for an ornate settee.

about the venue: Puku

Now I am the coolest canadian in Hanoi, I drank a coffee in Puku, there are comfy chairs and hipsters, ipods and loads of people wearing sunglasses in doors, it's the best of both worlds, you get to see vietnamese people but not eat there disgusting food or drink that odd quaint coffee! Fanatstic!

about the venue: B-52 Lake

This place is like 'voting'. I went once and it's rubbish. It's just a bit of old crap in a pond. I'd prefer to stick pins in my eyes then waste my time finding this place and being so disappointed. This is only for those idiots who have seen Rambo too many times and I don't mean the first one, which is sweet. I give it one cause I saw a beggar with no legs tied to the back of a bike. She smiled, which was sweet. Actually that's worth three stars.

about the venue: Si Phu Restaurant

Took a friend who was visiting from Saigon here recently. I'd heard it was a good place from a friend of mine and I have to say his recommendation was not misplaced.

We had the Sy Phu special (as mentioned before) which includes beef, various seafood, veg, an odd looking mini sausage, and some noodles. All very tasty (even the odd sausage) and very good value.

They have a couple of passable bottles of wine, almost reasonably priced.

I do like the individual Lau hotpot idea and will definitely go back, especially during these colder days. It'd be a good venue for a small, lively party.

about the venue: Pacific Beer Hall

Sigh, I hate to be the guy who trashes a place based on one awful experience, especially a place that, ostensibly, I still kind of like (everything I wrote in my first review still stands), but then I figure people should know. Basically, I took some friends out to Pacific, everything was going great until one of my friends bit into a spring roll and almost broke his teeth. Lo and behold, a nut in the spring roll. Not a peanut, a nut that goes on the other end of a screw. I like to think I'm not one of those expats that loves picking fights with locals over minor issues, but I don't think its completely out of line to not pay a bill if there are motorbike parts in the food. So I called for the manager, made my point clear, and walked out. Hey, mistakes happen. It wasn't personal, I wouldn't have thought to mention that in a new review. But then the scene turned into something from a bad kung fu movie. As we're walking away scores of people run out of nowhere to argue with us. I point at the nut. They point at the check. I point at the nut. They point at the check. I raise my voice. They start getting physical. After getting jostled, pushed around a little and getting my hand smacked whenever I showed the nut, I managed to push my way through the crowd and leave. In a comedy, the head chef would have come out and I would have gone Lloyd Christmas on his heart, but as it was, it was just a pretty shitty experience.

about the venue: La Badiane

Nothing to be added to the previous posts. I staggered out of here euphoric. Amazing, amazing food and well worth the price. The lamb, the salmon, the aubergine and the ravioli starters, the wine the wine, the wine. Lucky the (good) music is quite loud as the filthy moans of pleasure escaping your lips between chews when you eat here could disturb the other diners.
Splatter me with "meh's" or "fails" if you will for my skinny review but there really remains nothing to say apart from this could possibly be the best meal I have ever had. Ever.

about the venue: Hung Dung Laptop

no photo available

Had a noisy laptop in need of some servicing. Had I found some compressed air I probably could have done it myself but figured I might as well have the pros do it.

On the recommendation of a Vietnamese friend of mine I was given the contact details of Hung Dung Laptop Service.

Found the place very close to Bach Khoa (Hanoi University of Technology), talked to Mr. Dung who let me watch his staffer open it up and clean it out for 20 minutes to kill the dreaded noise. In the back there were 8 guys working solely on laptops.

Service cost about 50,000VND.

FYI-He speaks no English, so you might want to have a Vietnamese-speaking friend on standby to do some over-the-telephone translation. If you have no idea what's wrong with your laptop, maybe you're better off bringing that friend.

about the venue: Ancient Town

Went in here last night on recommendation from a fellow NH. We'd heard it was the EXACT same menu as Little Hanoi, but cheaper and tastier. Both were true. The food was a bit cheaper (5-10,000 VND less), the drinks were much cheaper (Tiger was 15,000, a glass of Da Lat was 30,000). The food was quite tasty, but took absolutely forever to be served. Hence, the three stars. True, there were large tour groups in there and I understand the pressures a kitchen can have, but... Despite the hour of waiting time, I would return again and would recommend it for the food quality/ price point.
